The First Modern Comedies : The Significance of Etherege, Wycherley and Congreve.
Norman Norwood Holland.
Starting from the point of view that all the details in the plays—the intrigues, romances, cuckoldings, manners, clothing, disguises—are meaningful, the author uses findings of intellectual history to establish relationships of the comedies to intellectual developments of the century. He shows how these authors fit into the gradual development of the “modern” world view—the scientific picture of the universe. He includes a chapter on the staging of Restoration plays.
